If you only use one chemical properly in a self-serve car wash bay, make it the pre-soak. It is the single most important step in the entire wash sequence โ and the one most people either skip entirely or don't let work long enough.
At Village Car Wash & Laundromat in Farmington, NH, our self-serve bays use Simoniz Super Kleen as the pre-soak solution. Here is exactly what it does, how long to let it dwell, and why it makes every other step more effective.
What Is Pre-Soak and What Does It Do?
Pre-soak is a high-alkaline foaming solution applied to your vehicle before scrubbing or rinsing. It is designed to do one thing exceptionally well: chemically dissolve road film, grease, and heavy dirt before any mechanical action touches your paint.
The alkaline chemistry works by breaking the molecular bond between road grime and your vehicle's surface. Road film โ the thin, greasy layer of exhaust residue, tire rubber particles, and pollution that coats your car โ is oil-based. Alkaline solutions cut through oil-based contamination extremely effectively, lifting it off the paint so it can be rinsed away cleanly.
Without pre-soak, you are trying to scrub off road film mechanically โ which takes more effort, takes more time, and risks dragging abrasive particles across your paint surface. With pre-soak, the chemistry does the heavy lifting before you ever pick up the foam brush.
How Long Should Pre-Soak Dwell on Your Car?
Apply pre-soak from top to bottom across your entire vehicle, then do not rinse. Let it sit for 60 to 90 seconds before moving to the foam brush step. The chemical needs time to penetrate and loosen road film โ rinsing immediately wastes most of its effectiveness.
What to Do During the Dwell Time
The 60โ90 second wait is not wasted time. Use it productively:
- Apply tire cleaner to all four wheels while the pre-soak dwells on the body
- Use the foam brush on a particularly dirty panel while pre-soak works on the rest
- Check windows and mirrors for bug splatter โ apply an extra pass of pre-soak to those areas
Pro tip: Apply an extra pass of pre-soak to your front bumper, grille, and hood leading edge where bug splatter and road tar accumulate. Give those areas a full 90 seconds before scrubbing โ the chemistry will dissolve most of it without any scrubbing needed.
Why Is Pre-Soak pH 11โ13?
The high pH โ strongly alkaline โ is intentional. Road film and grease are acidic and oil-based. Alkaline solutions neutralize and dissolve acidic and oil-based contamination. The higher the pH, the more aggressively it cuts through heavy grime.
This is also why you should not let pre-soak dry on your vehicle. At high concentration, strongly alkaline solutions can etch into clear coat if left too long in direct sun or on a hot surface. Apply, dwell 60โ90 seconds, then move to the next step. Do not apply and walk away for 5 minutes.
The Correct Order โ Pre-Soak in the Full Wash Sequence
Pre-soak works best when used in this sequence:
- High Pressure Soap โ initial rinse to knock off loose dirt
- Tire Cleaner โ apply to wheels and let dwell
- Pre-Soak โ apply top to bottom, dwell 60โ90 seconds โ you are here
- Foam Brush โ scrub with the brush while pre-soak has loosened everything
- High Pressure Soap โ rinse everything off
- Clearcoat Protectant โ seal and protect
- Spot Free Rinse โ final mineral-free rinse
Common Pre-Soak Mistakes
- Rinsing immediately โ the most common mistake. Let it dwell or you wasted the chemical.
- Skipping it entirely โ your foam brush has to work much harder and risks scratching paint by dragging grit.
- Only applying it to part of the car โ apply top to bottom, all panels, for even results.
- Applying it in direct sun on a hot surface โ chemicals dry faster and can spot. Wash in shade when possible.
